Extracurriculars

Working at Kumon:

I started working at Kumon during my junior year and I wanted to work somewhere that would be somewhat related to academics while also earning some money from it which is why I chose Kumon. I work as a grader where I grade students’ papers and give them feedback on what they got wrong and how they can fix these mistakes. I have found this to be an impactful place to work in education as it has helped me contribute to helping other students learn.

Hospital Volunteer:

I have been volunteering at Southern Hills Hospital since April of 2023 where I work the front desk 4 hours a week. Throughout my experiences there, my favorite job while at the front desk is delivering items to patients. It is always a pleasure to see patients receive gifts from their friends and families.

Research:

During my sophomore summer I immersed myself in doing research. I have helped with research projects at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. For projects at SIU I was tasked with creating machine learning models for various civil engineering projects which include:

  • Calculating/predicting discharge of water according to temperature, precipitation, humidity (relative and specific), height of the water gauge, and evapotranspiration

  • Predicting drought occurrences and severity using SVM, ANN, and Random Forest models

  • Finding variance and correlation in climate data (temperature, precipitation, wind speed, humidity) from different parts of the US by building the following machine learning models:

    • Kendall Tau, P value, and slope trend analysis

    • Principal Component Analysis (PCA)

    • Canonical correlation analysis

    • Cluster analysis

    • Correlation and regression analysis

  • The poster to the left of this sentence is my project involving the drought occurrences which was presented at the 2024 Annual Mid-American Environmental Engineering Conference

Football:

My first season as a freshman, I got to play in Allegiant Stadium where we won the state championship. The season after that was the complete opposite. Finishing the season with only 1 win was tough for the whole team after moving up a division, but we all appreciated the learning curve and were ready to be resilient and take this on as a challenge. It was my first season as a varsity starter and after the rough season it drove me to challenge all aspect of my physical self to help my team gear up to avoid the same result next season. Junior year was also a little rough as injuries plagued our team including me but it taught me to be resilient through the ups and the downs.
